Ever heard of taking responsibility for yourself? And do you know what it means?

The human mind cannot understand denial. It is incapable of it. It is undeniably so. I’ll give you an example: don’t think about bananas. OK, what flashed before you? You can’t tell your brain what not to do. This is why we often reinforce things in ourselves that we want to banish, just by not wanting to.

It’s empowering to be positive, even if it’s hard at first. Take parenting, for example. Instead of saying “don’t eat on the sofa,” it’s enough to say “eat at the table.” When we work with people, we tell them what we expect from them, not what we don’t want. Think about it, in the shop, when the clerk asks you what you want, you don’t say “I don’t want bananas.”

Motorcyclists know this very well. The bike goes where you look. If you look at the pothole, you’re going to hit it. If you look between the pothole and the pothole, you’re going to go there. That’s because that’s where you’re focusing. It’s the same in life. If you focus on the obstacles, you’ll hit them. If you focus on your goal, your path, you’ll get there.

It’s your choice what you focus on. That is what it means to take responsibility for ourselves.
